The Accompong Maroons

It all started when…

Members of three African tribes escaped enslavement by the Spanish and British and settled in the mountains of Cockpit Country, Jamaica in the late 1600s. They:

  • Came together with a shared mission to defeat the British.

  • Used the landscape to their strategic advantage and are recognized as initiating guerilla warfare.

  • Defeated the British in 1738-39  and negotiated a peace treaty, signed in blood.

  • Established a sovereign state for Maroon self-governance that, to this day, operates independently, governed by its own rules and traditions.

  • Preserve a rich legacy of freedom, autonomy, and respect that is admired across the globe.
